The IT is changing very fast. We get smarter and faster applications, smaller computers, more quiet ones, bigger hard drives. This process also includes media discs, such as Cd’s and DVD’s. Since the optical drive was created, we evolved through Cd’s and DVD’s to the Blu-ray format. It has some opponents, therefore I’d like to say a few words about it.
1. Blu-ray enables cost-cutting. The cost of an blu-ray disk will meet with a DVD very soon. The same about of space, the same cost but up to 9 times bigger capacity! This way, every company that burns anything onto digital discs (and I’m not talking exclusively about movie/music producers, but also everyone, who perhaps backups his data.
2. Blu-ray disks last longer than cheap Cds or DVDs. Have you ever tried to play a CD or DVD and i didn’t want to work, even if it was just fine a month ago? These media types degrade with time. Blu-Ray disks however last even a few times longer than media types of today.
3. It’s fun not to worry about space! How many times did you complain that there’s just not enough space on the disk? You won’t have to worry about that any more (probably
) since the Blu-Ray disk can store 25 GB (1 layer) or 50 GB on a 2-layer disk.
Of course, if we’re a bigger company, within our calculations we have to include the costs of modifying the infrastructure. It’s good to seek for the right moment though, since the cause should pay itself back rapidly.
